There are many trekkers who have been in Everest Base Camp but never heard of Kalapatthar. Kalapatthar which literally means “Black Rock” is 5,643 meters height Mountain situated at Gorak Shep. The trail to Kala Patthar started from the right of the Gorak Shep where you can find plenty of tea houses and lodges.
During the Everest base camp trekking, you will mostly reach at Gorak Shep during the daytime. Here you will get two option, one go to Everest base camp and return to Gorak Shep for a night stay or second climb to Kala Patthar and return to Gorak Shep.
Most of the trekkers here choose the first option and miss the second option and they don’t get a chance to climb the Kala Patthar and see the spectacular view of all of the Everest Range and the Khumbu Glacier. This is because it takes extra 4 hours to climb Kala Patthar which takes lots of effort. You can’t make both on the same day. So it is better either you go with the first option and climb to Kala Patthar next morning or go with second option and trek to EBC next morning.
Many guides hesitate to take you to the Kala Patthar and lead you to the EBC without mentioning about Kala Patthar and trekking agencies might charge you extra cost to include this in the itinerary. If you are physically fit and capable to walk then don’t miss to climb the Kala Patthar if you are in Gorak Shep during your trek to Everest region.
